Water-Moon Avalokitesvara

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Ink and color on silk; 83.4 x 35.7 cm; Ho Am Art Museum, Yongin, South Korea
Goryeo dynasty paintings of Water-Moon Avalokitesvara were sometimes influenced by descriptions in the story of the legendary Korean Master Uisang. After returning from his studies in China during the Tang dynasty, Uisang had a vision of Avalokitesvara during meditation, and was inspired to construct Naksansa Temple. Pictures like this attempt to illustrate Uisang's vision. The painting was listed as Treasure No. 926 in 1987.
Avalokitesvara sits on a rock, crossing the right leg over the left knee. The left foot rests on a lotus pedestal. A transparent stole decorated with faint circular patterns is draped over the headdress and hangs over the arms, partially covering an inner robe with finely patterned hems. The index finger of the right hand is extended in a pointing gesture. The nimbus and the partially visible mandorla are portrayed with thin golden lines.
