Qingshan Temple Pagoda: Heavenly Kings
CHINA, Shaanxi, Xi'an; Tang dynasty (618–907); Line incision on stone; 80 x 34 cm; Lintong Museum, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China
These small stone doors were discovered in the underground palace of the Qingshan Temple Pagoda in 1985. The carved images of the Heavenly Kings stand opposite each other, one holding a spear and the other carrying a sword. They are dressed in helmets, armor, and battle boots. The crown-shaped canopies above their nimbuses are decorated with tassels and ribbons. At the top of each door, there is an elegant apsara scattering fresh flowers among flowing clouds. |
