Avalokitesvara in a White Robe
CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368-1644); Ink and color on silk; 145.1 x 53.2 cm; Seikado Bunko Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan
Surrounded by a large mandorla, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is seated on a rock by the sea. Cliffs rise behind the Bodhisattva, and a pine tree grows at the top of the picture. On the left, faintly painted Dharma protectors look down from behind the cliffs. Below, a dragon emerges from the turbulent sea to offer a jewel to Avalokitesvara. The painting is diverse and finely detailed. In the top left corner, there is an inscription that was added by the monk Jingshan Huiming of Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, China. |
