Yulin Cave 25: Virudhaka

This image of Virudhaka, Heavenly King of the South, is located on the right side of the back (east) wall in the antechamber. The image is paired with that of Vaisravana, Heavenly King of the North, located on the left side of the same wall.
Virudhaka wears a helmet and full armor. He holds a long sword in one hand while the other hand is held at the chest. The king has a calm expression on his face. His skin is light and he has gentle features, in contrast with the image of Vaisravana on the left, depicted with dark skin and fierce features. Virudhaka stands upon a demon, indicative of his ability to conquer evil. The strong lines and vivid use of color make this image particularly striking. |
