Milarepa Meditating in Caves
BHUTAN; Rhinoceros horn; H: 15 cm; National Museum of Bhutan, Paro
Carved from rhinoceros horn, this work depicts Milarepa sitting in meditation in two separate caves in a sacred mountain landscape, among rugged rocks and waterfalls. A squat figure at the base of the carving may be a yeti, or other mythical creature, believed to inhabit the Himalayas.
Milarepa was known for his ascetic practice and was able to thrive in austere mountain landscapes, where he reached a high level of cultivation. The purpose of this work of art was also to inspire devotees to pursue their own cultivation with diligence and determination. |
