Bodhisattva in Contemplation

The statue depicts a smiling Bodhisattva sitting in the relaxation posture, in the contemplative pose. It was listed as National Treasure No. 83 in 1962. The headdress is plain as is the upper body that is decorated with a collar necklace. The lower body is ornately draped with fabric cascading down the seat in decorative folds. This style is believed to have passed onto the Northern Qi dynasty (550-577) from the Eastern Wei (534-550) and then to Korea. This sculpture, believed to be excavated near Andong, has a striking resemblance to another statue kept in Koryuji Temple, Japan. |
