Vajrapani Bodhisattva

NEPAL; 8th–9th century; Copper; H: 27.5 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
Vajrapani stands on a lotus pedestal in the tribhanga posture, with the weight of the body on the left leg. The tall three-leaf crown worn by the Bodhisattva encloses a topknot equally as high, from which locks of hair fall over the shoulders. The rest of the figure 's jewelry is plain, and the earrings are different in each ear. A long sacred thread loops down the body. A hollow openwork nimbus edged with flames surrounds the figure 's head. A sash is worn diagonally around the hips. A four-ended vajra is held in the left hand, and the right hand holds a jewel.
