Gongxian Cave 1: Ceiling

This carving is located on the ceiling of the cave. It consists of a pattern of equal-sized squares surrounding the central pillar. The squares closest to the central pillar are engraved with apsaras in bas-relief, while the second ring is comprised of lotus-born beings. The outer ring features two different types of lotuses carved side by side. The frames of the squares are engraved with scroll leaf and lotus motifs.
The carving is relatively well preserved, and the original colors, though faded, can still be vaguely recognized. Caves 3 and 4 have similar ceilings, but this one is unique in its completeness and complexity. |
