Dunkar Cave 1: Donors

CHINA, Tibet, Ngari; Guge Kingdom (circa 10th-17th centery), circa 11th century
This mural on the east wall portrays two nobles wearing white robes with red and blue trim and light blue lapels. The nobles sit in a horse chariot below a large canopy decorated with streamers. The male figure on the left has a white nimbus, wears earrings, and joins palms. The head of the female figure to the right rests on the male figure’s shoulder. The long braided hair reaches the waist, and a blue cape is draped over the shoulders. The couple may have been the donors who sponsored the cave’s construction.
