Mogao Cave 61: Nun Making an Offering

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368)
This figure is painted on the south wall of the corridor. There is an inscription in Chinese and Tangut alongside the image. The face of the nun is obscured. Her bent posture suggests she is elderly, and she seems to be taking a step forward. The nun holds a lotus between joined palms. Precise black lines are used to depict the folds in her robe. The image communicates a sentiment of simple devotion.
