St. George, Harry Hemersley (1845-1897)

Harry Hemersley St. George was a British soldier and painter during the 19th century. St. George was well-versed in painting landscapes, buildings, and human figures. He was a realistic artist who primarily worked in oil and watercolor paints. Living for some time in Sri Lanka during the British colonial period (1796-1948), St. George created several works of art, including two paintings of Monk, during this time that are now part of the collection at the British Museum in London.
Ten of St. George's paintings from his time in Sri Lanka feature Buddhist themes. These works include Anuradhapura, The Ancient Buddhist City, Mahathupa Within Anuradhapura, The Great Bodhi Tree in Mahavihara, and The Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. St. George's other Buddhist-themed works include several standing, seated, and reclining Buddha statues which are revered in various temples. |
