Feilai Peak Caves Niche 70: Marici
CHINA, Zhejiang, Hangzhou; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368); Stone; H: 2.1 m
Located on a cliff by the southern bank of Lengquan (Cold Fountain) Stream, this arched niche has a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Inside the niche is Marici, wearing a five-leaf crown, necklace, robes, and a long draped stole. The face is rectangular, with arched eyebrows, curved lips, and an urna on the forehead. The expression is benevolent and kind, with a hint of a smile. Marici sits in relaxation posture on a lotus throne, holding an asoka flower in one hand and forming the varada (wish-granting) mudra with the other. A pig lies below the lotus throne; one of Marici’s feet rests on a lotus pedestal placed on its back. |
