Ajanta Cave 19: Seated Buddhas
INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa mid-to-late 5th century
These images are located on the left wall of the main hall. Each framed image contains a Buddha seated in full lotus position. The Buddhas have nimbuses, usnisas, and long earlobes, and their oval faces convey carefree tranquility. They sit upright against backrests, their hands forming either the dhyana (meditation) mudra or the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. In some images, heavenly beings make offerings to the Buddha, and in others an attendant stands on either side. Floral motifs adorn the spaces between the figures. |
