Bijungri Sculptures

SOUTH KOREA, North Chungcheong, Cheongwon; Three Kingdoms Period (57 BCE–668 CE); Stone
These badly worn remains date from the earliest period of Buddhism in Korea and were listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 114 in 1982. The composite figure on the right may be a Bodhisattva, judging by the Chinese influenced style of clothing. The radiating nimbus seems to have been surrounded by a mandorla upon which are reliefs of Buddhas seated in niches on the right. On the left, the prominent folds of the robe of the standing figure form an abstract arrangement. Beyond that shape is a stone slab on which the figure is shallowly incised within a decorative arched surround.
