Wanjin Pagoda: Model Pagoda

This colored sandstone pagoda was excavated from the base of Wanjin Pagoda in 1970. The solid pagoda is built in imitation of a three-story wooden pagoda and is carved from gray sandstone. The surface is painted in red, orange, blue, green, black, and white. The concave section of the Sumeru base has rounded columns with lions in curved niches. Carvings of two rows of upright lotuses surround the top edge of the base.
Of the three stories, the first has columns at the corners with double doors on the sides, alternating with images of the Buddha. Linking the columns, there are finely decorated colored architraves. All three roofs have corrugated tiles and no obvious upward curving at the corners. The second and third stories have circular columns, and the sides have reliefs of flowers, leaves, running goats, and other creatures. The spire consists of a double-layer upright lotus and an inverted bowl, although the remainder is missing. |
