Yungang Grotto 11: Cross-Ankled Bodhisattva Niche

Located at the center of the first tier on the west wall, this niche is made up of three bays divided by two octagonal columns. The lintel of the niche is decorated with heavenly beings who make offerings or fly with musical instruments. In the central bay is an 83 cm high carving of Maitreya Bodhisattva seated with ankles crossed and with one hand held before the chest. The Bodhisattva has delicate facial features and wears a tall headdress over shoulder-length hair. The body is clothed in a stole draped over both shoulders and across the chest, as well as a short lower garment. An attendant Bodhisattva stand on each side of Maitreya, and a Bodhisattva in contemplation sit in each of the side bays. Below the central section is a row of small seated Buddhas, and under each column is a figure making offerings. |
