Seokguram Grotto: Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara
SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Unified Silla dynasty (668–935); Stone; H: 2.2 m
This Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara is found in the center of the circular wall behind Sakyamuni Buddha in the main chamber of the Seokguram Grotto. The body is sculpted in bas-relief, while the head is carved in mid-relief.
The Bodhisattva’s crown bears an image of the Buddha, and the Bodhisattva’s eleven heads are backed by a round nimbus. The figure is dressed in robes and stoles, and the chest is adorned with decorative ornaments. The Bodhisattva’s left hand holds a vase with a lotus, while the right holds up a beaded ornament. The Bodhisattva stands barefoot on a lotus pedestal. Although carved from rock, this presentation of Avalokitesvara appears to flow as if painted on silk. |
