Lianhuashan: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Guangdong, Guangzhou; dated 1994; Bronze; H: 40.88 m
The statue was consecrated in 1994 and depicts Avalokitesvara wearing a shawl over a high headdress fronted by a Buddha. A total of 120 t of bronze was used to construct the statue while 9 kg of gold was used to gild it. Behind the head is a petal-shaped nimbus with cloud-pattern sidepieces from which ribbons descend to the shoulders. The robed Bodhisattva stands on a double lotus supported by a tall octagonal base. An inscription on the base identifies the figure as Avalokitesvara. There is a vase in the left hand, while the right hand is raised in the lotus mudra.
