Zhang Sheng Tomb: Two Monks

CHINA, Henan, Anyang; Sui dynasty (581–618); Clay; Henan Provincial Museum, Zhengzhou, China
The two statues were discovered in 1959 at the Zhang Sheng Tomb in Anyang. They are special due to the fact that clay statues of monks were rarely excavated from tombs. These two figures are roughly molded and were once painted. The figure on the right measures 24 cm and wears a robe made of patches. He carries a belt in his right hand, while the other hand is hidden by a fold. The shorter monk is 16.5 cm high. The figure leans forward while holding a vase in the left hand and an incense burner in the right hand.
