CHINA, Sichuan, Chengdu; Southern Liang dynasty (502–557); Sandstone; H: 60 cm; Chengdu Museum, Sichuan, China
This statue was found in 1995. Vimalakirti is depicted sitting on a throne and holding a fan. His hair is tied up and encircled by a radiating nimbus. A golden mountain censer flanked by two Dharma protecting lions is on the base with a human figure standing at each corner. The two figures at the front wear robes with wide sleeves and hold imperial court batons, while the two at the back hold jars. The entire statue was painted and some parts were gilded, while the eyebrows were outlined in ink. This statue is special as Vimalakirti is rarely depicted by himself in artworks.
