Sakuramotobou Temple: Sakyamuni Buddha

JAPAN, Nara, Yoshino; Hakuho period (645–710); Gilt bronze; H: 17.9 cm
This small copper statue dates from the Hakuho period (645–710) and was originally gilded. The Buddha's rounded face is solemn beneath the high usnisa. The right hand is raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and the left hand is half closed and rests on the knee. Monastic robes fall from the shoulders to overspread the throne on which the figure is seated. The folds ripple downwards in waves of increasing depth in a style typical of that era.
