Bodhidharma

CHINA; Dated 1948; By Pan Tianshou; Ink and color on paper; Pan Tianshou Memorial Hall, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China
This finger painting was done by Pan Tianshou, an artist and educator from Ninghai, China. Pan was adept at both finger and brush painting, creating bold, powerful images of flowers, birds, landscapes, and figures. His works embrace and build upon the traditions of Chinese art.
In this picture, Bodhidharma is shown in profile with a broad forehead, a beard, a large earring, and an imposing build that brings to mind a rock or a mountain. The beard and collar are painted with thick dabs of ink. A sense of freedom is expressed through the unrestrained technique.
