Bezeklik Cave 15: Floral Pattern

CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan; circa 11th-12th century
This mural is located on the ceiling of the corridor. It is comprised of a round central motif, surrounded by four semicircles, with cloud and floral patterns painted inside each. Cloud patterns are painted in the spaces between the shapes and fringe patterns decorate the sides of the mural. A reddish-brown is used as the base color of the mural, with patterns colored in yellow, red, and green. The patterns in this mural are more stylized and interpretive than the flowers and clouds typically depicted in murals from the High Tang period (712–756).
