Figurine of Maitreya Bodhisattva

Figurine of Maitreya Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Jade; H: 6.1 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
This jade figurine of Maitreya Bodhisattva shows him smiling benevolently. He has a large round head, sparkling eyes, prominent cheeks, earlobes that fall below his broad shoulders, and a short neck. His ample body is bare and he wears a robe that covers the right shoulder and falls off the left. His hands are resting on his legs. The left leg is crossed in front of his body, while the right leg is upright in a very natural and relaxing posture.
This figurine is made from light yellow jade with some darker makings. The skill of the craftsman has enabled him to bring out the spirited nature of Maitreya.
