Tuyoq Caves: Illustration of Buddhist Sutras

These fragments, discovered in the Tuyoq Caves, are thought to have been part of a large sutra illustration. The fragment on the right is painted with a strip of patterning. Medallions outlined in vermilion, each containing a golden Buddha image, are separated by floral motifs. This could be the border of a scene from a sutra or decoration on the side of a building within the illustration. The fragment on the upper left appears to depict the nimbus and part of the headdress of a large figure. On the lower left, there are images of a deer and a flower. |
