Mathura: Head of a Buddha

This head was unearthed from Mathura. Unlike later statues depicting Sakyamuni, in this Kushan head from Chaubara, Mathura, the hair is completely smooth and the usnisa is piled in a double whorl incised with fine lines. The eyebrows are almost joined except for the circular depression of a missing urna between them, which may once have been inlaid with a gemstone. The contours of the eyes are unusually pronounced and the full lips have a slight upward curve. The dimensions of the head suggest that the original statue must have been larger than life-sized. |
