Lingyanshan Temple: Avalokitesvara in a White Robe

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou; Qing dynasty (1644–1911), dated 1844; By Liu Yanchong; Ink and color on paper; 64 x 26 cm
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is pictured with a plain white nimbus, wears a white robe draped over the top of a small headdress, and sits peacefully on a cushion of leaves upon a rock. The Bodhisattva looks down at Sudhana, who stands below the rock on the left, bowing with his palms joined in reverence.
The painting is mainly colored in pale blue and green. Concise, flowing lines are used to depict the folds in the robes of the figures. The mountains, rocks, and trees in the background are outlined with black ink and washed with shades of green.
