Flowers Falling upon a Reading Arhat

CHINA; Yuan dynasty (1271-1368); Ink and color on silk; 175.3 x 98.2 cm; National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan
This painting depicts a seated Arhat reading a Sanskrit scripture. The Arhat wears a patterned monastic robe and hoop earrings. A shawl is draped over his head and tied around his neck. He has dark skin, a large nose, and a long beard. A large nimbus surrounds his head. His bright, intense eyes gaze down at the scripture. Colorful flowers fall from the sky and are scattered on the ground around the Arhat. On the left, a white monkey reaches up to catch one. This unique, poetic image is detailed and colorful.
