Mogao Cave 39: Apsaras
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
These images from the High Tang period (712–756) appear on the ceiling of the main chamber and the back (west) wall niche. Two round-faced apsaras fly through swirling, colorful clouds with offerings for the Buddha. They are adorned with large golden ornaments, and they wear long, flowing garments and stoles which trail far behind them. One figure holds a lotus in both hands, while the other holds one lotus in each hand. |
