Dehua: Statuette of Budai

CHINA, Fujian, Quanzhou; Dated 1989;By Lin Mudian; Porcelain; H: 14 cm; Dehua Ceramics Museum, Fujian, China
Budai is a manifestation of Maitreya Bodhisattva and is commonly seen in Chinese temples. He has a round face with a high forehead, and is depicted laughing heartily. A string of chanting beads hangs from the neck on to the bare chest and belly. Seated on the ground, he holds a jewel in his right hand and rests his weight on his sack. His robe hangs down from his shoulders and flows around his legs and feet.
The statuette, which was made in Dehua, has a translucent quality. Budai's character and sense of humor are effectively depicted in this portrayal.
