Xiude Temple: Maitreya Bodhisattva
CHINA, Hebei, Baoding; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Marble; H: 44 cm; Hebei Provincial Museum, Shijiazhuang, China
The statue was excavated from Xiude Temple and depicts Maitreya seated on a lion throne with his ankles crossed. Both hands are damaged but appear to be in a mudra, as are the standing Bodhisattvas on either side. The whole composition is contained within a mandorla, with kneeling figures paying reverence and a seated Buddha image carved in low relief around the rim. Figures making offerings can be seen on the four-legged stand beneath the Buddha. |
