Monywa: Great Buddha

MYANMAR, Sagaing, Monywa; Dated 2008; Cement; H: 116 m
Also known as Laykyun Setkyar, the construction of this colossal statue of Sakyamuni Buddha began in 1996 and was completed in 2008. Gazing downwards, the Buddha wears a floriated band embellished with gems on the forehead. Other Thirty-Two Marks of Excellence include elongated ears, an urna and three lines on the neck. The golden monastic robe covers both shoulders and has one end pulled over the left. The Buddha’s hands hang down naturally and grasp the edges of the robe, giving it a flared look. The double lotus pedestal that the figure stands upon appears low but there are two more floors beneath, underlying the broad base up which a flight of steps ascends.
