Wat Yai Suwannaram: Paying Respect to the Buddha
THAILAND, Phetchaburi; Ayutthaya Kingdom (circa 1350–1767), circa 1702–1708
These colorful murals are painted on the side walls of the ordination hall at Wat Yai Suwannaram. A statue of Sakyamuni Buddha rests on an altar in front of the back wall of the hall. On the side walls, images of heavenly beings, yaksas, and asuras are arranged in five registers. The figures kneel and face towards the statue, piously joining their palms and paying homage. Most of the murals are well preserved. They are better preserved paintings from the Ayutthaya Kingdom and regarded among the best painting works in Thailand.
The five registers are separated by bands of patterning. All of the figures wear headdresses, ornaments, and patterned lower garments. Though their facial features are sketched with only a few strokes, they each have a distinct appearance, a reflection of the skill of the artist. The murals are primarily colored in red, white, and gold. The background is decorated with jagged bands and floral motifs. |
