Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 177: Master Wanhui of Sizhou

Located on the north wall of Cave 177, this is the only extant cave carving of Master Wanhui. He wears a head covering and monastic robes, and appears to be meditating as he sits in full lotus position with eyes closed, mouth slightly open, and hands in his lap.
Wanhui was active during the reign of Emperor Zhongzong (reigned 683–710). He was considered an eminent monk, had influential power over the government and public, and was believed to be a manifestation of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. According to the Song Biographies of Eminent Monks, Wanhui was born with a foolish appearance and only began to speak when he was eight or nine years old. Later, he displayed supernatural powers and his sayings were accepted as prophesy. |
