Mogao Cave 305: Dragon Carriage
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618)
This image is on the north slope of the ceiling. A carriage with a canopy is harnessed to four dragons. Large blue flags fly behind the carriage as it plunges through the clouds. The vehicle carries a male deity and is led on its course by a heavenly being who stands at the helm. A large creature swims through the air alongside the carriage. |
