Yufoyuan Temple Jade Buddha Pavilion: Sakyamuni Buddha
CHINA, Liaoning, Anshan; Dated 2002; Jade; 7.95 x 6.88 m
The piece was carved from a single piece of jade that was found in 1960 and weighs 260.76 t. The stone contains seven distinct colors and was included in the Guinness World Records in 2002 as the largest jade Budda in the world. It features Sakyamuni Buddha on the front, who is seated in the lotus position, his right hand in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. On the back, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva stands on a turtle wearing a cloth-covered headdress that enshrines a seated Buddha. A willow branch is held in the raised right hand and a vase is in the left hand. The falling stole and the hem of the skirt are blown to one side by an invisible wind. |
