Wayao Pagoda: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA, Beijing; Song dynasty (960–1279); Porcelain; H: 29.5 cm; Capital Museum, Beijing, China
The statue was discovered from the foundation of Wayao Pagoda in 1964 and depicts Avalokitesvara sitting enveloped in a long robe that covers the body and gives it a streamlined shape. The robe opens to reveal the ornate necklace that adorns the chest while a inner robe is visible just below.
The Bodhisattva wears a crown fronted with an image of Amitabha Buddha. An urna is visible on the forehead, while the long face has small delicate features. The figure is presented in an innovative and refreshing way although the elements still adhere to the traditional Song (960–1279) style. |
