Mogao Cave 108: Illustration of the Vimalakirti Sutra
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Five Dynasties (907–960)
Located on the right side of the front (east) wall, this is part of a mural depicting the “Chapter on Manjusri’s Visit” in the Vimalakirti Sutra. In the sutra, the lively philosophical debate between Vimalakirti and Manjusri attracts a distinguished crowd of kings, officials, and princes to the city. This segment of the mural shows a group of kings wearing decorative robes and headdresses with tasseled veils. They are surrounded by court officials, guards, and lady attendants who hold fans and incense burners. |
