Sewu Temple: Seated Buddha

INDONESIA, Central Java, Prambanan; 9th century; Andesite; H: 78.7 cm; Art Institute of Chicago, USA
The statue was discovered at Sewu Temple and is thought to be of one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. Despite the missing head, the rest of the body displays features of the Jawa style. The figure is seated in full lotus position and wears a thin monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare. A fold falls from the left wrist over the skirt, and the hem of the skirt itself is neatly pleated where it falls from the crossed ankles. These are the only indications of the robe's presence apart from the slight indented line where it crosses the chest.
