Horyuji Temple: Standing Bodhisattva

JAPAN, Nara, Ikoma; Asuka period (538–645), 7th century; Gilt bronze; H: 56.7 cm
The 7th century sculpture was cast in one piece and is hollow inside. Its bronze exterior has been gilded. It is listed as an Important Cultural Property.
　 The unnamed Bodhisattva has a disproportionately large head and appendages. The figure wears a high headdress and holds some prayer beads in the hands that are joined before the chest. The statue is balanced on an inverted lotus pedestal. Stoles descend from the figure’s shoulders and arms to create an ordered, layered effect.
