Longxing Temple: Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA, Shandong, Qingzhou; Northern Wei to Eastern Wei dynasty (386–550); Limestone; H: 82 cm; Qingzhou Museum, Shandong, China
The Bodhisattva stands on a simple lotus pedestal. The hair is arranged high and confined with a circlet, above which is a lotus flower decoration. The head has long features and looks straight ahead through half closed eyes. A broad necklace with a pendent hangs from the shoulders, as does the stole that descends in a double loop over the skirt to rise again across the arms and fall on either side of the body to the feet. The long skirt is secured with a knotted sash at the waist and ruffles downward, filling the lower half of the aureole. Behind the head is a nimbus with a lotus relief surrounded by a plain rim. It is anchored at the base by moon disc ornaments located on the shoulders. |
