Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Dali Kingdom (937–1253); Gilt bronze; H: 28.5 cm; National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan
The Bodhisattva is seated in half lotus position and holds a fan made of leaves in the right hand and a blossom-shaped bowl in the other hand. The figure wears a tall crown that is damaged and may once have included a Buddha image. The statue has a marked similarity to the paintings of Avalokitesvara by Zhang Shengwen of the Dali Kingdom (937-1253), which seems to confirm the identification. The figure is lavishly decorated with jeweled ornaments and wears a number of stoles. One of the stoles is knotted diagonally over the chest while another drapes about the arms and falls to the lap.
