Palcho Monastery Kumbum Stupa Wish Fulfilling Shrine: Gampopa

CHINA, Tibet, Gyantse; 14th–17th century; Clay; H: 100 cm
Gampopa is also known as the physician of Dagpo. He was a disciple of Milarepa in the early 12th century and an important forerunner of the Karma Kagyu school. The Gampopa figure wears clothing that represents a Tibetan monk and a red ritual hat. He has a disproportionately large head compared with the body. The figure sits in a full lotus position with hands in the dhyana (meditation) mudra. The rim of the throne-back is decorated with cloud patterns that culminate in a flaming Dharma jewel. There is a lotus flanked by a pair of lions on the base of the throne.
