Termez: Life of the Buddha

UZBEKISTAN, Surkhandarya, Termez; 2nd–4th century; Limestone; H: 42 cm; Termez Archaeological Museum, Surkhandarya, Uzbekistan
The work was excavated from the site of Termez. Though the piece is much damaged, enough remains to identify two seated Buddhas with attendants situated one above the other. The foliage of a Bodhi tree surrounds the nimbus of the robed upper figure, whose raised hands might once have been in Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. A figure on the left kneels to make an offering.
The Buddha below has a circular nimbus and wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders, though in this case the hands are in dhyana (meditation) mudra. The work has obviously been influenced by the Gandharan style, though the outlines are sharper and more detailed.
