Arhat

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Clay with glaze; H: 94 cm; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
This 16th century piece of a middle aged Arhat on a rectangular seat overhung by a cloth with an inner floral design and foliated border. The figure's head is slightly turned to one side, with eyes looking straight ahead and mouth slightly open. The monastic robes are in blue and green, while the trim and a rice-field pattern are in black. The right arm is bent upwards and may have once held an object such as a sutra.
