Gwanryongsa Temple Medicine Buddha Hall: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, South Gyeongsang, Changnyeong; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), 12th century; Granite; H: 110 cm
The Buddha is the main statue in the Medicine Buddha Hall and was carved during the 12th century. It was listed as Treasure No. 519 in 1970. The Buddha sits in full lotus position wearing a thick monastic robe with a distinct hem that covers both shoulders. The figure is accounted to be the Medicine Buddha, although the medicine pot usually attributed to him is missing from the left hand. The statue is separately sculpted from the three-layered lotus throne on which he sits. The lotus throne rests on a fluted octagonal support that is inserted between the throne and an inverted lotus base.
