Bezeklik Cave 20: Monks Making Offerings

This painting is located on the inner wall of the south corridor. The three monks wear outer monastic robes covering inner robes, and hold flowers in their hands. The draping of the robes is depicted with dense, smooth lines making them seem especially thick and heavy.
This painting differs significantly from depictions of monks from the Central Plains. According to the Sanskrit cartouche above their heads, the monks are Indian; however, the appearance of the monks more closely resembles that of Uighurs due to their round faces, long eyebrows, willow-like eyes, and small mouths. |
