South Xiangtangshan Grottoes: Pratyekabuddha

CHINA, Hebei, Handan; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Stone; H: 167.6 cm; Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA
This sculpture was originally from the South Xiangtangshan Grottoes. Pratyekabuddha’s head is tilted upward, emphasizing his long neck. He wears monastic robes and stands with both hands cupping a lotus bud. The folds of the robe begin as incisions, and become more assertively sculpted in their vertical drape down the body. The distinct style of sculpture resembles that of the Northern Qi dynasty (550-577).
