Yongjangsa Temple: Medicine Buddha

The Medicine Buddha sits cross-legged on a lotus throne with a medicine bowl in the left hand and the right hand in the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare. The distinctive leaf-patterned mandorla encloses a similarly patterned nimbus and aureole with flower-decorations. The throne is a three-tier Sumeru structure, with a reversed lotus resting on a hexagonal base. The sculpture was created during the 8th century and shows elements popular during the Unified Silla dynasty (668–935). |
