Hongfo Pagoda: Amitabha Buddha
CHINA, Ningxia, Yinchuan; Western Xia period (1032-1227); Ink and color on silk; 48.5 x 31.7 cm; Guyuan Museum, Ningxia, China
This picture, discovered in 1990 in the Hongfo Pagoda Heavenly Palace, features Amitabha Buddha wearing a red monastic robe. The Buddha has a round face with long, slender eyes, small lips, and large ears. The hands form a mudra in front of the chest. Amitabha sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne atop a Sumeru platform. The Buddha is outlined in simple, concise strokes. His monastic robe and mandorla are colored with a single coat of paint, while the skin is painted using the wash technique common in Central Asian artworks. |
